Energy Optima vs HOMER Pro
Both tools optimize hybrid systems. HOMER Pro is the long-standing standard for microgrid feasibility; Energy Optima is built for utility and C&I BESS projects that need bankable PV yield and 25-year economics. Here is an honest split.
What HOMER Pro does genuinely well
HOMER Pro (originally from NREL, now maintained by UL Solutions) is excellent at one specific job: searching across a large space of generation and storage configurations to find the least-cost mix for a given load. For remote microgrids, island systems and community electrification — where fuel logistics and generator sizing dominate — it is mature and well understood by lenders and donors.
- Configuration search over a wide space. It compares thousands of combinations of PV, wind, diesel, battery and grid, then ranks them on levelized cost.
- Robust sensitivity analysis. Fuel price, component cost and resource variability sweeps are first-class citizens.
- Long track record in microgrid feasibility. Reviewers and development banks know its outputs.
Where HOMER Pro thins out for BESS work
HOMER's simplifications are deliberate — they keep the search fast. They also mean it is not designed to produce a bankable package for a grid-connected BESS.
- Battery degradation is a single linear parameter. No separation of calendar versus cycle ageing, and no interpolation across C-rate. For LFP systems running one or two cycles a day over 20 years, that materially misstates capacity retention and replacement timing.
- PV modelling is coarse. No 3D near-shading, no MPPT-level string sizing, no detailed inverter clipping or 10-category loss waterfall.
- Component library is limited. Custom components mean manual parameter entry rather than selection from manufacturer datasheets with degradation tables.
What Energy Optima does
- Degradation from real cell data. SOH and RTE are interpolated in three dimensions (year × C-rate × cycles per day) from manufacturer degradation tables.
- Manufacturer-grade PV model. Multi-array design with MPPT string sizing and a 10-category IEC 61724 loss waterfall.
- LP-optimized capacity sizing against an 8760-hour load profile, rather than a configuration search.
- 25-year financial projections on paid tiers — NPV, IRR, LCOE, payback and battery augmentation planning (inflation and replacement included). Payback analysis is available on the free tier.
Where HOMER Pro beats us
Being straight with you: HOMER Pro has a decade of institutional familiarity in microgrid feasibility, a broader built-in configuration search, and outputs that many development-finance reviewers already accept. If your project is an off-grid village microgrid being screened for a grant, HOMER is a defensible choice and swapping tools late in that process earns you nothing.

Which should you choose?
Choose HOMER Pro if…
- Your project is an off-grid or island microgrid being screened for feasibility.
- You need a broad built-in configuration search across many technologies.
- The reviewer of your study already expects HOMER outputs.
Choose Energy Optima if…
- You need degradation modelled from real cell data, not a single fade rate.
- The project needs bankable PV yield (3D shading, string sizing, loss waterfall).
- You are building a 25-year cashflow with NPV, IRR and augmentation timing.
